Love on Algeria: Praying for the Nations

Algeria, a nation steeped in rich history and vibrant culture, holds a spiritual landscape predominantly shaped by Islam. For centuries, the echoes of ancient Christianity faded, giving way to a strong Muslim majority. Yet, beneath the surface of this North African nation, a remarkable story of faith is unfolding. Despite significant challenges and a climate of increasing pressure, the Christian church in Algeria is not merely surviving; it is experiencing a quiet yet powerful resurgence, particularly among the Kabyle Berber people.

Historically, Christianity in Algeria dates back to the Roman era, with figures like Saint Augustine hailing from this land. However, after the Arab invasions, its presence diminished. The reintroduction of Christianity during French colonial rule saw a temporary rise, but most Christians departed after Algeria gained independence. Today, Christians constitute a small but growing minority, estimated at around 0.3% of the population, totaling approximately 156,000 believers. While Catholicism has a historical presence, the most significant growth is seen within Protestant and Evangelical communities, which, though difficult to quantify precisely, are estimated to be around 0.1% of the population and are growing at an impressive rate of about 8% annually.

This growth, however, comes at a cost. Algerian Christians, especially converts from Islam, often face intense pressure and opposition from both state authorities and their own families and communities. Churches have been closed, leaders prosecuted, and believers isolated. Yet, their faith remains steadfast, a testament to the enduring power of the Gospel. Many of Algeria's 37 people groups, including the Algerian Arabic-speaking majority, the Berber Shawiya, and various Bedouin groups, remain largely unreached with the message of Christ, presenting a vast spiritual harvest field.

**Prayer Points for Algeria:**

1. **For the Church:** Pray for strength, resilience, and unity among Algerian believers as they navigate persecution and isolation. Ask God to provide safe spaces for fellowship and worship, and for their faith to deepen amidst adversity. 2. **For the Lost:** Pray for a spiritual awakening across Algeria, particularly among the unreached people groups. Ask God to open hearts and minds to the truth of the Gospel, and for many to come to know Jesus Christ as their Savior. 3. **For Government and Leaders:** Pray for wisdom and compassion for Algeria's leaders. Ask God to soften their hearts towards religious minorities, to uphold religious freedom, and to cease the persecution of Christians. 4. **For Specific Challenges:** Pray for an end to the persecution and discrimination faced by Christians, especially converts from Islam. Ask for divine protection, provision, and comfort for those who have lost their homes, families, or freedom due to their faith. 5. **For Revival and Awakening:** Pray for a mighty move of the Holy Spirit across Algeria, bringing widespread revival and transformation. Ask for a spiritual outpouring that transcends cultural and religious barriers, leading to a flourishing of the church.

**How to Get Involved:**

1. **Pray Regularly:** Commit to praying consistently for Algeria, using the prayer points above and seeking updates on the situation of Christians in the nation. 2. **Support Missions Organizations:** Partner with reputable organizations like Open Doors, SAT-7, and Middle East Concern, who are actively supporting and advocating for persecuted Christians in Algeria. 3. **Educate Others:** Share the story of the Algerian church with your friends, family, and church community to raise awareness and encourage more people to pray and get involved.

**A Scripture for Algeria:**

**Psalm 126:5-6** - *“Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy! He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.”*

**Application:** This verse offers a powerful message of hope and perseverance for the Algerian church. Despite the tears and hardships of sowing the seeds of faith in a challenging environment, God promises a harvest of joy. It encourages believers to continue their faithful witness, trusting that their labor in the Lord is not in vain, and that a great spiritual harvest awaits Algeria.
