Love on Bahrain: Praying for the Nations
Bahrain, a small island nation in the Arabian Gulf, is a land of contrasts and spiritual significance. While predominantly Muslim, it stands out among its neighbors for its relative religious diversity. This nation, with its rich history and vibrant culture, holds a unique place in the heart of God, and the Christian community, though a minority, plays a vital role in its spiritual landscape. The indigenous Bahraini population is almost entirely Muslim, yet a long-standing native Christian presence exists alongside a larger expatriate Christian community, contributing to a dynamic spiritual environment.
Christianity in Bahrain represents a small but growing segment of the population. Estimates suggest that Christians comprise around 12-14.5% of Bahrain's approximately 1.5 million residents, totaling an estimated 184,000 believers. This community is diverse, encompassing major denominations such as Roman Catholic, Protestant, Syrian Orthodox, Mar Thoma, and Greek Orthodox. Encouragingly, the church in Bahrain has experienced substantial growth over the past decade, with some reports indicating a doubling of membership since 2009. The evangelical presence, though smaller, is significant, estimated at 2.3% to 2.9% of the population, highlighting a dedicated core of believers committed to sharing their faith.
Despite this growth, significant spiritual needs remain. Key unreached people groups, such as the Bahraini Arabs and Persians in Bahrain, are primarily Muslim and deeply rooted in their Islamic identity. These communities represent a profound call to prayer and mission, as they have had limited exposure to the Gospel. The spiritual journey in Bahrain is not without its challenges, particularly for converts from Islam who often face considerable pressure and even persecution from family and society.
In light of these realities, our prayers for Bahrain are fervent and specific:
First, let us pray for the Church in Bahrain: Ask for strength, boldness, and unity among both native and expatriate Christians. May they stand firm in their faith and be a beacon of Christ's love in their communities.
Second, pray for the lost: Intercede for open hearts among the Muslim majority, especially the Bahraini Arabs, that they may encounter the truth and grace of the Gospel.
Third, pray for the government and leaders: Ask for continued religious tolerance and freedom, and for divine wisdom to guide the nation's leadership in all decisions.
Fourth, pray for specific challenges: Lift up converts from Islam, asking for divine protection and perseverance as they navigate societal pressures and potential persecution.
Fifth, pray for revival and awakening: Cry out for a powerful spiritual awakening across Bahrain, touching every segment of society, both expatriate and indigenous, leading to widespread transformation.
There are tangible ways to partner with what God is doing in Bahrain. You can actively pray for the nation, committing to regular intercession for the points mentioned above. Consider supporting ministries that are faithfully working in the region, providing resources and personnel to advance the Gospel. Furthermore, educate others about the spiritual needs and opportunities in Bahrain, raising awareness and mobilizing more prayer and support. Organizations like Open Doors, SAT-7, and Voice of the Martyrs are key ministry partners making a significant impact in this nation.
As we reflect on Bahrain, let us hold fast to the words of Matthew 28:19-20: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." This verse serves as a powerful reminder of the Great Commission, calling believers to share the Gospel with all people, including the unreached in Bahrain, and assuring them of Christ's unfailing presence in this vital work. May our prayers and actions bring forth a harvest of souls in Bahrain, for the glory of God.
