Love on Bhutan: Praying for the Nations

Bhutan, often called the “Land of the Thunder Dragon,” is a breathtaking Himalayan nation where the spiritual landscape is profoundly shaped by Vajrayana Buddhism. This ancient faith is not merely a religion but an integral part of the national identity and spiritual heritage, influencing every aspect of life from art and architecture to daily customs. While the constitution guarantees religious freedom, the reality for the small Christian minority is one of significant social pressure and restrictions on public worship and evangelism. This unique context makes Bhutan a critical nation for prayer and focused ministry.
Estimates suggest that Christians comprise approximately 2.3% of Bhutan's population, totaling around 20,000 individuals. The church in Bhutan, though small, is reported to be growing, with Pentecostal denominations forming the majority. However, this growth often occurs in the shadows, as Christians cannot legally form churches, own property for worship, or conduct public outreach. The evangelical presence is particularly small, estimated at about 0.67% of the population, highlighting the immense spiritual need. Many people groups within Bhutan remain unreached, with 98.1% of the nation's 52 people groups considered unreached by the Joshua Project. Key unreached groups include the Ngalop and Walang, who have had minimal exposure to the Gospel.
The challenges faced by believers in Bhutan are substantial. Converts to Christianity can experience social ostracization, family disownment, and even legal repercussions if accused of forced conversion. This environment necessitates fervent prayer and strategic support from the global church. Organizations like Open Doors, Words of Hope, and Save Bhutan Ministry are actively working to support the Bhutanese church through various means, including Christian radio programming, Bible translation, and advocacy.
Let us unite in prayer for Bhutan:
* **Strengthen** the Church in Bhutan, granting believers courage, wisdom, and unity as they navigate persecution and social pressure. * **Open** the hearts of the lost in Bhutan, that they may encounter the truth of Jesus Christ and experience His transformative love. * **Guide** the government and leaders of Bhutan to uphold true religious freedom, ensuring justice and protection for all citizens, regardless of their faith. * **Address** the unique challenges of persecution and isolation faced by Christians, providing supernatural protection and opportunities for fellowship and growth. * **Ignite** a powerful revival and spiritual awakening across Bhutan, leading to a widespread movement of God's Spirit.
There are tangible ways to get involved and support missions in Bhutan. Firstly, commit to consistent prayer for the nation and its believers. Secondly, support organizations like Open Doors, Words of Hope, or Save Bhutan Ministry, which provide vital resources and advocacy. Thirdly, educate others about the spiritual needs and challenges in Bhutan, raising awareness and mobilizing more prayer and support.
As we reflect on the spiritual landscape of Bhutan, let us hold onto the promise of Isaiah 40:31: “but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” This verse reminds us that even in challenging circumstances, God grants strength and endurance to those who trust in Him. May the church in Bhutan find renewed strength in the Lord, and may His light shine brightly in the Land of the Thunder Dragon.
