Love on Chad: Praying for the Nations
Chad, a nation nestled in the heart of Africa, presents a spiritual landscape marked by both profound challenges and remarkable opportunities for the Gospel. With a population of over 21 million, Chad is predominantly Muslim, yet a significant Christian minority thrives amidst various adversities. The spiritual fabric of Chad is complex, with Islam holding the largest share at 52.8%, while Christians constitute approximately 38.5% of the population, with evangelicals making up about 10.1%. This dynamic creates a unique mission field where the light of Christ is shining ever brighter.
The nation has faced considerable political instability, including the assassination of President Déby in 2021, leading to a transitional government. This, coupled with internal rebellions, banditry, and the massive influx of refugees from Sudan’s civil war, has exacerbated poverty and hindered human development. More than half the population lacks basic water services, and acute hunger is widespread. Despite these immense challenges, the Christian community in Chad is not only resilient but also experiencing growth, particularly among Muslim-background believers. Bible storytelling and Chadian Arabic Christian radio are proving to be effective tools in spreading the good news in culturally relevant ways.
Major Christian denominations in Chad include Roman Catholics, who represent the largest Christian group, and various evangelical Protestant groups, with the Evangelical Church of Chad (EET) being a prominent force. However, vast swathes of the population remain unreached. Key unreached people groups, especially in the northern and central regions, include the Kanembu, Zaghawa, and Maba peoples. The long-term vision for these groups is to see indigenous believers established, discipled, and equipped with translated scriptures, fostering self-sustaining local works.
As we consider Chad, our hearts are stirred to pray:
Strengthen and unite the diverse Christian denominations in Chad, empowering them to be a beacon of hope and truth in their communities. May the Church rise above denominational differences to present a unified front for the Gospel.
Pray for open hearts among the Muslim majority and unreached people groups, that they may encounter the love of Christ through Chadian believers and media. Let the seeds of the Gospel sown through various ministries bear abundant fruit.
Intercede for Chad’s leaders, that they would govern with integrity, transparency, and justice, promoting peace and stability for all citizens. May God raise up righteous leaders who prioritize the well-being of their people.
Ask for divine intervention in Chad’s ongoing struggles with poverty, lack of basic services, and the influx of refugees, bringing relief and sustainable solutions. May humanitarian efforts be effective and bring lasting change.
Cry out for a powerful spiritual awakening across Chad, leading to widespread repentance, revival, and a deeper commitment to Christ among all people. Let the Holy Spirit sweep across the nation, transforming lives and communities.
There are tangible ways to get involved in God’s work in Chad. Support organizations like WEC International, Baptist Mid-Missions, and Cru that are actively working to spread the Gospel and provide humanitarian aid. Pray regularly for the unreached people groups, specifically the Kanembu, Zaghawa, and Maba, that they may hear and respond to the message of salvation. Consider participating in short-term mission trips or supporting Chadian Christian radio and Bible translation efforts to reach more people with the Word of God.
Isaiah 41:10 offers a powerful message of hope for Chad: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” This verse reminds the Church in Chad that even amidst political instability, poverty, and persecution, God is with them, strengthening and upholding them. They can trust in His unfailing presence and power to carry them through every trial and to fulfill His purposes in their nation. Let us stand in solidarity with our Chadian brothers and sisters, believing for a mighty move of God in their land.
