Love on Egypt: Praying for the Nations
Egypt, a land steeped in ancient history and vibrant culture, holds a significant place in the heart of God. While predominantly Muslim, this nation is home to the largest Christian community in the Middle East, primarily the resilient Coptic Orthodox Church. Their faith, forged through centuries of perseverance, stands as a testament to God's enduring presence amidst both constitutional guarantees of religious freedom and the ongoing realities of societal discrimination and legal challenges.
With an estimated Christian population ranging from 9.5% to 10% of the total, approximately 10.8 to 11 million believers call Egypt home. The Coptic Orthodox Church forms the vast majority of this community, alongside other denominations such as Armenian Apostolic, various Catholic rites, Orthodox churches (Greek and Syrian), Anglican/Episcopalian, and other Protestants united under the General Evangelical Council. While the church in Egypt is stable in terms of absolute numbers, its percentage of the total population is declining due to higher Muslim growth rates and emigration. Evangelicals constitute about 2.4% of the Christian population, representing a vibrant, though smaller, segment of believers.
Yet, the spiritual landscape of Egypt also reveals significant unreached people groups. Beyond the Christian community, the majority Sunni Muslim population, as well as smaller, often isolated groups like the Nubians and various Bedouin tribes, have limited access to the Gospel. These communities represent a profound call to prayer and engagement for those who long to see every nation transformed by Christ's love.
Our hearts turn to prayer for Egypt, believing in the power of God to move in mighty ways:
* **For the Church:** Pray for the unity, strength, and divine protection of the Church in Egypt, especially the Coptic Orthodox community, as they navigate complex challenges and faithfully live out their convictions. Ask for renewed courage and unwavering faith. * **For the Lost:** Pray for the hearts of those who have not yet encountered Jesus Christ to be softened and opened to the Gospel. Pray for divine appointments and creative opportunities for them to hear and respond to His love and truth. * **For Government and Leaders:** Pray for wisdom, justice, and genuine religious freedom for President Sisi and all government officials, that they may uphold equality and protect the rights of all citizens. * **For Specific Challenges:** Pray for an end to discrimination, persecution, and instances of forced conversions that Christians in Egypt sometimes face. Intercede for divine intervention in addressing poverty, social injustice, and any forms of oppression. * **For Revival and Awakening:** Pray for a powerful spiritual revival and awakening to sweep across Egypt, touching every city, village, and heart. May many turn to Christ, experiencing profound transformation and becoming beacons of hope in their communities.
How can we, as global believers, get involved and stand in solidarity with our Egyptian brothers and sisters?
1. **Support Organizations:** Actively seek out and support reputable organizations working on the ground in Egypt that provide humanitarian aid, advocate for religious freedom, and faithfully share the Gospel. Your financial and practical support can make a tangible difference. 2. **Pray Regularly and Specifically:** Commit to consistent prayer for the Church and people of Egypt, utilizing the prayer points above as a guide. Let your prayers be a spiritual lifeline, connecting you to their struggles and triumphs. 3. **Educate and Advocate:** Take the initiative to educate yourself and others about the situation of Christians in Egypt. Share their stories, raise awareness, and foster informed advocacy for religious freedom and human rights.
As we lift up Egypt, we are reminded of the prophetic words in Isaiah 19:23-25: "In that day there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria. The Assyrians will go to Egypt and the Egyptians to Assyria. The Egyptians and Assyrians will worship together. In that day Israel will be the third, along with Egypt and Assyria, a blessing on the earth. The Lord Almighty will bless them, saying, 'Blessed be Egypt my people, Assyria my handiwork, and Israel my inheritance.'" This scripture paints a glorious picture of a future day when Egypt, alongside other nations, will be blessed by God and worship Him. It offers a powerful vision of hope and reconciliation, reminding us of God's ultimate redemptive plan for all peoples. Let us pray with faith, believing that this vision will become a reality in Egypt.
