Love on Fiji: Praying for the Nations
Fiji, a jewel of the South Pacific, is more than just pristine beaches and turquoise waters; it is a nation with a rich spiritual tapestry and a people known for their warm ‘Bula’ spirit. At its heart, Fiji is a predominantly Christian nation, with approximately 64.2% of its population identifying as Christian, totaling around 585,000 believers. This strong Christian presence is deeply intertwined with the indigenous Fijian culture, shaping the nation’s values and community life. Major denominations like the Methodist Church, Roman Catholic Church, Assemblies of God, Seventh-day Adventist, Anglican, and Baptist communities all contribute to a vibrant and growing church landscape. Indeed, the church in Fiji is experiencing significant growth, with various denominations reporting encouraging increases in membership, and an estimated 26.5% of the population identifying as evangelical or born-again.
Yet, amidst this spiritual vibrancy, there remain significant areas of spiritual need. Fiji is home to several unreached people groups, primarily adherents of Hinduism and Islam, who have had limited exposure to the Gospel. Communities such as the Bhojpuri Bihari, South Asian Bengali-speaking, Punjabi, South Asian Telugu-speaking, and Tamil (Hindu traditions) represent a crucial mission field. These groups often live within their own cultural and religious frameworks, with very low evangelical percentages, highlighting the urgent need for focused outreach and prayer.
As we consider Fiji, our hearts are stirred to intercede for this beautiful nation. Let us lift up specific prayers:
First, **for the Church**: Pray for continued spiritual growth and unity among the diverse Christian denominations in Fiji, that they may effectively reach out to all communities with the love of Christ, demonstrating His power and grace.
Second, **for the lost**: Pray for the Hindu and Muslim communities, particularly the unreached people groups like the Bhojpuri Bihari and Tamil (Hindu traditions). Ask that their hearts would be open to the Gospel, that they would encounter Jesus in powerful ways, and that barriers to faith would be broken down.
Third, **for government and leaders**: Pray for wisdom and integrity for Fiji’s government and leaders. May they govern justly, uphold religious freedom for all, and address the nation’s social issues with compassion, righteousness, and a commitment to the well-being of every citizen.
Fourth, **for specific challenges**: Pray for an end to the pervasive issue of domestic violence and for healing in the youth crisis caused by fatherlessness. Intercede for improved access to basic services in rural and remote communities, and for discernment and protection against fraudulent religious activities that seek to exploit rather than uplift.
Finally, **for revival and awakening**: Pray for a powerful spiritual awakening across Fiji. May the Holy Spirit sweep through these islands, bringing widespread repentance, revival, and transformation in every sphere of society, from families to government, and from cities to the most remote villages.
Inspired by Isaiah 42:12, which declares, “Let them give glory to the Lord and proclaim his praise in the islands,” we are reminded of Fiji’s divine calling. This verse is a powerful reminder for Fiji, an island nation, to continue to lift up the name of Jesus and for His glory to be proclaimed throughout its shores and among all its people groups. We can all play a part in this. You can get involved by committing to consistent prayer for Fiji, supporting reputable missions organizations like YWAM Fiji, Marine Reach Fiji, or Caritas Fiji, or by exploring opportunities to participate in short-term mission trips to offer practical help and share the Gospel. Let us stand with Fiji, believing for a mighty move of God that will touch every heart and transform every corner of this precious nation for His glory.
