Love on Georgia: Praying for the Nations

Nestled at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Georgia is a nation steeped in ancient history and profound faith. With a spiritual landscape deeply intertwined with its national identity, Georgia stands as a testament to enduring Christian heritage. The majestic Caucasus Mountains bear witness to centuries of devotion, where the Georgian Orthodox Church has served as a cornerstone of culture and community. While the majority of Georgians, approximately 85.84% of the population, identify as Christian, primarily within the Georgian Orthodox tradition, the nation's spiritual journey is dynamic and multifaceted. This rich tapestry also includes minority Christian groups, such as Armenian Apostolic, Latin Church Catholics, and various Protestant denominations, alongside other faiths.

Despite its strong Christian roots, Georgia's spiritual terrain presents both triumphs and challenges. The church growth trend is stable, yet beneath the surface, there are nuances. While overall Christian identification may be experiencing shifts, specific denominations are witnessing pockets of growth and renewed vitality. This indicates a living faith, continually adapting and seeking deeper expression in a modern world. However, the spiritual harvest remains vast, with approximately 1.4% identifying as evangelical. This highlights the significant work still to be done, particularly among the key unreached people groups such as the Azerbaijani, Bezhta, Chechen, Didoi, Ghunzib, Inghiloi, Georgian Jews, Kist, Laz, Lezgin, Meskhetian Turks, and the Deaf community. These communities represent precious souls waiting to hear the life-transforming message of Jesus Christ.

Our hearts are stirred to pray for Georgia, believing in the power of God to bring forth a mighty move in this land. Let us lift up these specific prayer points:

First, pray for the Church in Georgia: Pray for renewed spiritual fervor and unity within the Georgian Orthodox Church and other Christian denominations, that they may boldly proclaim the Gospel and serve their communities with love and truth. May they be beacons of hope and healing in their nation.

Second, pray for the lost: Pray for those in Georgia who have not yet encountered the saving grace of Jesus Christ, especially among the unreached people groups. Ask that their hearts would be open to the message of hope and salvation, and that God would send laborers into these fields.

Third, pray for government and leaders: Pray for wisdom, integrity, and righteousness for the leaders of Georgia, that they would govern justly, protect religious freedoms, and promote peace and stability in the nation. May their decisions align with God's divine will.

Fourth, pray for specific challenges: Pray for an end to spiritual apathy and nominalism, for healing from historical wounds, and for divine intervention in areas of poverty and social injustice that affect the Georgian people. May God's justice and mercy prevail.

Fifth, pray for revival and awakening: Pray for a powerful spiritual awakening across Georgia, that the Holy Spirit would sweep through the land, bringing widespread repentance, revival, and a deep hunger for God that transforms every facet of society.

Inspired by John 8:32, "Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free,”" we are reminded that true freedom comes through abiding in Christ's word. For Georgia, a nation with deep Christian roots, it's a profound call to embrace a living faith that transforms lives and society, moving beyond tradition to a vibrant, personal relationship with Jesus. This is a call to freedom, a freedom that only Christ can offer.

There are tangible ways you can get involved and partner with what God is doing in Georgia. Commit to regular prayer for the nation, specifically for the prayer points listed above and for the spread of the Gospel. Support missionary organizations and local ministries working in Georgia, such as YWAM Tbilisi, Tbilisi International Christian Fellowship (TICF), and Ministries of Grace, through financial contributions or by volunteering your time and skills. Finally, educate yourself and others about the spiritual needs and cultural context of Georgia, raising awareness and encouraging others to engage in prayer and support. Together, we can make a difference for the Kingdom in Georgia.
