Love on Iran: Praying for the Nations

Iran, a nation steeped in ancient history and rich culture, is predominantly known for its deep roots in Shia Islam. For decades, the spiritual landscape has been characterized by a strict religious regime and significant challenges for religious minorities. Yet, beneath the surface, a profound spiritual transformation is unfolding, making Iran home to one of the fastest-growing Christian movements in the world.

While official statistics often report a small Christian population, estimates from organizations like Operation World suggest that the number of Christians in Iran now exceeds one million. This remarkable growth, particularly among Muslim-background believers, is a testament to the powerful work of the Holy Spirit. Despite severe persecution, including the threat of imprisonment and even death for apostasy, Iranians are turning to Christ in unprecedented numbers. This spiritual awakening is often fueled by disillusionment with the current political and religious establishment, leading many to seek truth and hope elsewhere.

Traditionally, major Christian denominations in Iran include the Armenian Apostolic Church, the Assyrian Church of the East, and various Catholic rites. However, the burgeoning underground church, often meeting in house churches, represents a vibrant and dynamic expression of faith. The evangelical movement, though a small percentage of the overall population, is experiencing exponential growth, with some reports indicating an annual increase of nearly 20%. This rapid expansion is a clear sign of God's hand moving powerfully in a nation often perceived as closed to the Gospel.

However, significant challenges remain. Iran is home to numerous unreached people groups, including Zoroastrians, Baha'i, Luri, Bakhtiari, Qashqai, Turkic Azeri, Turkmen, Gypsy communities, and Persian-speaking Jews. These communities have had limited exposure to the Christian message and represent vast fields for missionary endeavor.

As we consider Iran, let us unite in prayer:

* **For the Church:** Pray for the underground church in Iran, that believers would be strengthened in their faith, protected from persecution, and continue to boldly share the Gospel despite immense risks. * **For the Lost:** Pray for the millions of Iranians disillusioned with the current regime and Islam, that their hearts would be open to the truth of Jesus Christ and they would encounter Him through dreams, visions, and Christian witnesses. * **For Government and Leaders:** Pray for the government and leaders of Iran, that God would soften their hearts, bring about justice and religious freedom, and that their policies would reflect compassion and peace. * **For Specific Challenges:** Pray for those facing specific challenges such as persecution, imprisonment, and economic hardship due to their faith, that they would experience God's miraculous provision, comfort, and unwavering hope. * **For Revival and Awakening:** Pray for a mighty spiritual awakening and revival across Iran, that the Holy Spirit would sweep through the nation, transforming lives, families, and communities for Christ.

Inspired by Isaiah 43:19, 'See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland,' we believe God is indeed doing a new thing in Iran. This verse perfectly reflects God's power to bring forth new life and hope even in the most desolate and challenging environments.

How can you get involved? First, support organizations like Elam Ministries, Transform Iran, and Iran Alive Ministries, which provide Bibles and Christian resources in Farsi and equip leaders for the underground church. Second, commit to regular prayer for Iran, specifically for the persecuted church, unreached people groups, and for a move of God's Spirit across the nation. Third, educate yourself and others about the situation in Iran, raising awareness and advocating for religious freedom and human rights.

Join us in praying for Iran, believing for a harvest of souls and a powerful demonstration of God's love and grace in this strategic nation.
