Love on Iraq: Praying for the Nations
Iraq, a land steeped in biblical history, has seen its Christian community face immense suffering and decline due to conflict and persecution. Once a vibrant presence, their numbers have drastically reduced as many have fled their homeland.
Today, Christians are a small but resilient minority in Iraq, estimated at around 0.9% of the population, with approximately 150,000 believers. Major denominations include the Chaldean Catholic Church, Assyrian Church of the East, Syriac Orthodox Church, Syriac Catholic Church, Armenian Apostolic Church, and the Assyrian Pentecostal Church. While the overall trend has been one of decline, there are encouraging signs of new life and growth within some evangelical communities, representing about 0.2% of the population. This resilience is a testament to their enduring faith.
Despite challenges, the spiritual need in Iraq is immense. A staggering 98.5% of the population belongs to unreached people groups, including the Sorani Kurds and Middle-Eastern Turkmen, who have had little exposure to the Gospel. This calls the global church to pray and send laborers to these communities.
As we consider Iraq, our hearts are stirred to pray. Let us lift up specific prayers for this precious nation:
Pray for strength and resilience for the Christian community in Iraq, that they may stand firm in their faith amidst ongoing challenges and persecution. May they be beacons of hope and light.
Pray for the hearts of those who do not know Christ in Iraq to be open to the Gospel. Ask God to create opportunities for believers to share their faith boldly and lovingly, leading many to a saving knowledge of Jesus.
Pray for wisdom and justice for Iraqi leaders, that they would govern with integrity, protect religious freedoms, and work towards lasting peace and stability for all citizens.
Pray for an end to violence, displacement, and persecution against Christians and other minorities in Iraq. Ask for humanitarian aid to reach those in desperate need, and for comfort and healing for all who have suffered.
Pray for a powerful spiritual awakening across Iraq, that many would turn to Christ and experience His transforming love, bringing hope, healing, and reconciliation to every corner of the land.
For those wondering how to get involved, there are tangible ways to make a difference. Support organizations like Stand With Iraqi Christians (SWIC), International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC), and Christian Aid Mission, which provide vital humanitarian aid and support to displaced and vulnerable Christians. Commit to regular prayer for Iraq, focusing on the specific prayer points outlined, and interceding for peace, protection, and spiritual transformation. Educate yourself and others about the situation of Christians in Iraq, raising awareness and advocating for religious freedom and human rights.
Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us, "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." This verse offers a powerful message of hope and divine purpose for the people of Iraq, reminding them that even amidst hardship, God has a good future planned for their nation. Let us hold onto this promise and pray with unwavering faith for Iraq.
Join us in lifting up Iraq in prayer. Your prayers and support can make a profound difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters in Christ and for the unreached people groups longing to hear the Good News. Together, we can be part of God's plan to bring hope and healing to Iraq.
