Jordan, a land rich in biblical history and cultural heritage, stands as a crucial nation in the Middle East. While predominantly Muslim, with Sunni Islam comprising about 97.2% of its population, Jordan is also home to one of the world's oldest Christian communities. This vibrant, though minority, Christian presence has coexisted with its Muslim neighbors for centuries, often in relative peace. However, the spiritual landscape is complex, marked by a strong Islamic identity and a Christian population that, despite its deep roots, faces unique challenges and a declining demographic trend.
Recent statistics paint a clear picture: Christians constitute approximately 2.1% of Jordan's total population, which stands at around 11.45 million. This translates to an estimated Christian population of about 251,000 individuals. The evangelical percentage is notably smaller, at roughly 0.3%. Major Christian denominations include the Eastern Orthodox, Latin and Greek Rite Catholics, Syrian Orthodox, and various Protestant and Anglican/Episcopalian communities. While the overall Christian population has seen a decline due to emigration and lower birth rates compared to the Muslim majority, there are quiet movements of faith and conversion, particularly among those seeking deeper spiritual truths.
Jordan is also home to numerous unreached people groups, primarily various Arab communities such as the Bedouin, Jordanian, Palestinian, Syrian, and North Iraqi Arabs. Other significant unreached groups include the Adyghe, Azerbaijani, Bengali, Chechen, Druze, Kabardian, Kurd (both Kurmanji and Sorani), Nepali, and Romani (Domari). These groups largely remain unreached with the Gospel, presenting a significant call to prayer and missionary engagement.
As we consider Jordan, let us lift up these specific prayer points:
First, pray for the Church in Jordan to stand firm in faith amidst societal pressures and to be a beacon of hope and love, demonstrating Christ's compassion to their communities. Second, pray for the lost in Jordan, especially among the unreached people groups, that their hearts would be open to the Gospel message and that they would encounter Jesus Christ through dreams, visions, and courageous believers. Third, pray for the government and leaders of Jordan, that they would govern with wisdom, justice, and compassion, upholding religious freedom for all citizens and promoting peace and stability in the nation. Fourth, pray for those facing specific challenges in Jordan, including converts from Islam who experience family and societal pressure, and for refugees and vulnerable populations to find safety, provision, and spiritual solace. Finally, pray for a powerful spiritual revival and awakening across Jordan, that the Holy Spirit would move mightily, drawing many to repentance and faith, and transforming lives and communities for God's glory.
There are tangible ways to get involved and support missions in Jordan. You can support organizations working to provide humanitarian aid and development assistance to vulnerable communities and refugees, demonstrating Christ's love in practical ways. Additionally, commit to praying regularly and specifically for the Christian community in Jordan, for their protection, perseverance, and boldness in sharing their faith, and for the spread of the Gospel among unreached people groups. Lastly, seek out and support ministries focused on discipleship and leadership training for local believers, empowering them to effectively lead and grow the church. Key ministry organizations working in this nation include Open Doors, Joshua Project, and the Fellowship of Evangelical Churches (FEC).
Let Psalm 121:1-2 be our guiding scripture for Jordan: 'I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.' This verse reminds believers in Jordan, surrounded by challenges, that their ultimate help and strength come from God, the sovereign Creator. May we join in prayer, believing for God's mighty hand to move in Jordan, bringing hope, healing, and salvation to its people.
