North Korea, often called the Hermit Kingdom, stands as one of the most challenging nations for Christians globally. The spiritual landscape is dominated by a totalitarian regime that views any faith outside of its state-sanctioned ideology as a direct threat. Despite this intense persecution, a vibrant, resilient underground church continues to exist, a testament to unwavering faith in the face of unimaginable adversity.
Estimates suggest that approximately 1.7% of North Korea's population identifies as Christian, totaling around 450,000 believers. Among these, about 1.6% are considered evangelical. While official state-controlled churches like the Korean Christian Federation (Protestant), one Catholic church, and one Russian Orthodox church exist in Pyongyang, true Christian worship occurs in secret house churches, often organized along family lines to ensure safety. The church's growth trend is best described as stable, demonstrating remarkable endurance despite constant threats of imprisonment, torture, and death.
The vast majority of North Koreans remain unreached by the Gospel. Key unreached people groups include the Deaf, Han Chinese (Mandarin speakers), and the predominant Korean population, who are largely non-religious or adhere to traditional beliefs like Chondoism and Shamanism, all under the pervasive influence of the state ideology.
Prayer is a powerful weapon in this spiritual battle. Let us pray:
1. **Strengthen the Church:** Pray for the underground church in North Korea, that believers would be strengthened in their faith, protected from discovery, and find ways to safely gather and encourage one another. 2. **Reach the Lost:** Pray for the hearts of the North Korean people to be open to the truth of the Gospel, that God would supernaturally reveal Himself to them amidst the darkness and control. 3. **Transform Leaders:** Pray for Chairman Kim Jong-un and all government officials, that God would soften their hearts, expose them to His truth, and bring about a change in leadership that honors human dignity and religious freedom. 4. **End Persecution:** Pray for an end to the severe persecution, the labor camps, and the hostile classification of Christians, that justice and mercy would prevail in this nation. 5. **Awaken Revival:** Pray for a mighty spiritual awakening and revival to sweep across North Korea, transforming lives, families, and ultimately the nation for Christ.
There are tangible ways to get involved and support the courageous believers in North Korea. First, commit to consistent prayer for the persecuted church and the unreached. Second, support organizations like Open Doors, Voice of the Martyrs, and Christian Friends of Korea, who provide aid, Bibles, and advocacy for North Korean Christians. Third, raise awareness among your community about the plight of believers in North Korea and advocate for religious freedom. Every prayer, every act of support, makes a difference.
"The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him." (Psalm 28:7) This verse reminds us that even in the most oppressive circumstances, God is the ultimate source of strength and protection. For the Christians in North Korea, this truth is a daily anchor, sustaining them through trials and enabling them to trust in His unfailing help.
Join us in lifting up North Korea, believing that God's light can penetrate even the deepest darkness, and that one day, the Hermit Kingdom will resound with praises to His name.
