Love on Paraguay: Praying for the Nations

Paraguay, often called the "Heart of South America," is a nation rich in culture, history, and faith. Its spiritual landscape is deeply influenced by its colonial past, with Roman Catholicism holding a prominent place in society. However, beneath this traditional veneer, a vibrant and growing evangelical movement is stirring, bringing new life and hope to communities across the country.

With a population of approximately 7 million, Paraguay is overwhelmingly Christian, with an estimated 96.3% of its people identifying as followers of Christ. This translates to a Christian population of around 6.75 million. While Roman Catholicism remains the largest denomination, accounting for roughly 88% of the population, evangelical and Protestant churches are experiencing significant growth, particularly Pentecostal and charismatic movements. The evangelical percentage stands at about 6.1%, and the overall church growth trend is undeniably positive, with many denominations actively working to expand their reach and impact.

Despite this widespread Christian presence, there are still significant spiritual needs. Key unreached people groups, primarily indigenous Amerindian communities such as the Ache, Angaite, and various Guarani subgroups like the Nandeva and Mbya, represent a vital mission field. These groups, totaling around 28,000 individuals, often adhere to ethnic religions and have limited access to the Gospel. Ministry organizations like ABWE, Grace Ministries International, World Gospel Mission, and SIM International are actively working to reach these communities, providing spiritual and practical support.

As we consider Paraguay, let us lift up these prayer points:

* **For the Church:** Pray for Christian unity and collaboration among the many different evangelical denominations in Paraguay, and for local churches to embrace the challenge of reaching the unreached and needy within Paraguay and beyond. * **For the Lost:** Pray for the gospel to penetrate the hearts of those in unreached people groups, particularly the indigenous Amerindian groups and other least-reached communities, that they may come to know Christ. * **For Government/Leaders:** Pray for the leaders of Paraguay, that they would govern with wisdom, integrity, and justice, and that religious freedom would be upheld and protected for all. * **For Specific Challenges:** Pray for an end to corruption and immorality, which the Roman Catholic Church has admirably opposed, and for spiritual and social transformation in areas affected by drug cartels and poverty. * **For Revival/Awakening:** Pray for a powerful spiritual awakening across Paraguay, that the Holy Spirit would move mightily, bringing revival to the church and drawing many to faith in Jesus Christ.

There are many ways to get involved in what God is doing in Paraguay. First, commit to praying consistently for the nation, its people, and the Christian ministries working there. Your prayers are a powerful force for change. Second, consider financially supporting reputable missionary organizations and local churches engaged in evangelism and discipleship among the unreached people groups. Your generosity can provide essential resources. Third, if you feel called, explore participating in a short-term missions trip to serve alongside local ministries and share the Gospel firsthand.

Psalm 33:12 declares, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!" This verse serves as a powerful reminder that true blessing and heritage for Paraguay, and indeed for any nation, come from acknowledging the Lord as God. Let us pray that Paraguay will increasingly embrace this truth, becoming a nation fully blessed by His presence and purpose. Join us in praying for a spiritual harvest in Paraguay, believing that God will do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine.
