Love on Peru: Praying for the Nations
Peru, a land rich in ancient history and breathtaking natural beauty, also possesses a spiritual landscape as diverse and dynamic as its Andean peaks and Amazonian lowlands. For centuries, Catholicism has been the dominant faith, deeply interwoven with the nation's cultural fabric. However, recent decades have witnessed a significant shift, with a notable decline in Catholic adherence and a vibrant, growing evangelical movement, particularly in rural areas. This spiritual transformation presents both immense opportunities and pressing challenges for the Church in Peru.
Statistically, Christianity remains the overwhelming majority faith in Peru, with an estimated 94.1% of the population identifying as Christian. With a total population of approximately 34.3 million, this translates to roughly 32.3 million Christians. While Roman Catholicism still holds the largest share, major Protestant denominations such as the Assemblies of God, Baptist, Anglican, the Peruvian Evangelical Church, and the Christian and Missionary Alliance are experiencing steady growth. The evangelical percentage stands at a robust 14.5%, indicating a growing spiritual hunger and openness to the Gospel. This growth trend is a testament to the fervent prayers and dedicated efforts of missionaries and local believers alike.
Despite this encouraging growth, significant spiritual darkness persists. Key unreached people groups, primarily indigenous communities residing in the remote Amazonian and Andean regions, continue to live without adequate access to the Gospel. Groups like the Aguaruna (Awajun), Amahuaca, Amarakaire, various Asheninka subgroups (Pajonal, South Ucayali, Ucayali-Yurua), Bora, Candoshi, Capanahua, and Chayahuita largely adhere to ethnic religions, with very low evangelical and Christian adherence. These communities represent a profound mission field, where the light of Christ has yet to fully penetrate.
As we consider Peru, let us lift up these specific prayer points:
1. **For the Church:** Pray for the Church in Peru to be unified in spirit and purpose, boldly proclaiming the Gospel and demonstrating Christ's love through tangible acts of service to their communities. May they be a shining light, drawing many to salvation. 2. **For the Lost:** Pray for the lost in Peru, especially among the unreached indigenous groups, that their hearts would be open to hear the Good News and respond to the saving grace of Jesus Christ. May God send laborers into these harvest fields. 3. **For Government and Leaders:** Pray for wisdom, integrity, and righteousness for government officials and leaders in Peru, that they would govern justly, uphold truth, and work for the well-being of all citizens. May divine influence guide their decisions. 4. **For Specific Challenges:** Pray for an end to corruption, poverty, and social injustices that plague Peru. Pray for the Church to rise as a beacon of hope and a voice for the marginalized, bringing transformation to these deep-seated issues. 5. **For Revival and Awakening:** Pray for a powerful spiritual awakening and revival to sweep across Peru, transforming lives, families, and communities, and leading to a deeper commitment to Christ. May the Holy Spirit move mightily across the nation.
There are many ways to partner with and support missions in Peru. Consider supporting indigenous missionary efforts and church planting initiatives targeting unreached people groups in the Amazon and Andean regions. You can also partner with organizations providing humanitarian aid, education, and healthcare in impoverished communities, integrating spiritual outreach with practical assistance. Finally, engaging in short-term missions trips to Peru can provide invaluable support to local churches with evangelism, discipleship, and community development projects. Reputable organizations like ABWE, Christian Aid Mission, Mission to the World (MTW), and Inca Link International are actively working on the ground, making a tangible difference.
Romans 10:14-15 reminds us, "How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, 'How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!'" This verse highlights the urgent need for believers to be sent to Peru, particularly to the unreached, so that all may hear the Gospel and call upon the Lord for salvation. Let us commit to praying, giving, and going, so that the love of Christ may fully transform Peru.
