Love on Syria: Praying for the Nations
Syria, a land steeped in biblical history, holds profound significance for Christians worldwide. It was here, on the road to Damascus, that the Apostle Paul encountered Christ, and Antioch, a city within ancient Syria, was where believers were first called “Christians” (Acts 11:26). This rich heritage speaks of a vibrant faith that once flourished.
However, Syria's spiritual landscape today tells a story of immense challenge and resilience. The devastating civil war, beginning in 2011, profoundly impacted the Christian community. Before the conflict, Christians constituted approximately 10% of the Syrian population, numbering around 1.5 million. Today, that number has dramatically declined to an estimated 300,000, representing about 5.4% of the population. This sharp decline is due to the harrowing consequences of war: deteriorating living conditions, lack of opportunities, escalating costs, and pervasive dangers. The church in Syria is currently experiencing a declining trend, with the evangelical population estimated at a mere 0.2%.
Despite these formidable challenges, the Syrian church has demonstrated remarkable resilience and commitment. Church leaders have advocated for peace, and Christian communities have been at the forefront of humanitarian efforts, providing essential support, medical aid, psychological programs, and educational initiatives to families ravaged by war. Following the devastating earthquake in February 2023, churches opened their doors, offering emergency shelter and coordinating aid.
Yet, the future remains uncertain. With recent political shifts, Christians and other minority communities face increased vulnerability. This makes our prayers and support more crucial than ever. Let us unite in prayer for Syria. Pray for strength, courage, and unwavering faith for the Syrian church, for protection from violence and discrimination, and for empowerment to be beacons of hope and love. Pray for the millions in Syria who have yet to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ. Ask God to open their hearts to the Gospel and to send laborers into this harvest field, particularly among the unreached Alawite, Syrian Arab, Kurd, Kurmanji, and Levantine Bedouin people groups. Pray for wisdom, justice, and compassion for the new leaders of Syria, that they establish a government protecting religious freedoms and ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens. Pray for an end to the ongoing conflict, for healing from the trauma of war, and for economic stability. Ask God to provide for the physical and emotional needs of the Syrian people. Pray for a powerful spiritual awakening across Syria, that the Holy Spirit would move mightily, bringing repentance, reconciliation, and a widespread turning to Christ.
Syria’s journey is far from over, but with our fervent prayers and dedicated support, the light of Christ can continue to shine brightly in this ancient land. Let us stand in solidarity with our Syrian brothers and sisters, believing for a future filled with hope, peace, and spiritual renewal. You can get involved by praying consistently, supporting humanitarian aid through organizations like Embrace the Middle East, Open Doors, and Operation Mobilization, and advocating for religious freedom in Syria.
