In the heart of North Africa, where ancient history whispers through bustling medinas and across sun-drenched landscapes, lies the nation of Tunisia. A land with a surprisingly deep Christian heritage, Tunisia was once home to influential church fathers like Tertullian and Cyprian. While the spiritual landscape has shifted dramatically over the centuries, with Islam now being the faith of over 99% of the population, the embers of the Gospel are not extinguished. In fact, a small but resilient and growing community of believers is holding fast to the hope of Jesus Christ.
Today, the Christian population in Tunisia is estimated to be around 30,000 people, a tiny fraction of the nation's 12 million souls. This less than one percent includes a majority of foreign residents, primarily Roman Catholics, but also a courageous and expanding number of native Tunisian believers from Muslim backgrounds. The evangelical church, though representing less than 0.1% of the population, is alive and pressing forward. Despite facing significant societal pressure and government surveillance, the church in Tunisia is experiencing growth. This is a testament to the power of God to build His kingdom in even the most challenging of circumstances.
The spiritual needs in Tunisia are immense. The vast majority of the population has never had a clear presentation of the Gospel. Numerous people groups, including the majority Tunisian Arabs and various Berber communities, remain unreached. These are people living and dying without the knowledge of the saving grace of Jesus. This is why we must pray.
Let us lift up the nation of Tunisia in prayer. Pray for the small but growing church, that it would be strengthened, protected, and emboldened to share the good news with love and wisdom. Pray for the salvation of the lost, that the Holy Spirit would move powerfully across the land, opening hearts and minds to the truth of the Gospel. Pray for the government and leaders of Tunisia, that they would rule with justice and that there would be increasing freedom for all religions. Pray against the specific challenges of persecution and societal pressure that believers face daily. And let us cry out for a great revival and spiritual awakening to sweep through Tunisia, that the land that once nurtured the early church would once again be a beacon of light for Christ.
How can you get involved? First, commit to praying regularly for Tunisia. Your prayers are a vital part of the spiritual battle. Second, consider giving to reputable organizations like Open Doors, Operation Mobilization, or Cru, who are actively working on the ground to support and equip the Tunisian church. Third, educate yourself and others about the spiritual needs of Tunisia. By sharing these stories and prayer requests, you can help to raise awareness and build a global community of support for our brothers and sisters in this beautiful and strategic nation.
