Love on Turkmenistan: Praying for the Nations
Turkmenistan, a nation veiled in mystery and rich in ancient history, presents a unique spiritual landscape. Dominated by Islam, this Central Asian country is home to a small yet resilient Christian community. With approximately 3.7% of its population identifying as Christian, totaling around 278,000 believers, the church here faces significant challenges. The government maintains tight control over religious activities, making unregistered religious practice illegal and often leading to persecution. Despite these hurdles, the spirit of faith endures, echoing the perseverance of the early church.
While the Russian Orthodox Church represents the largest Christian denomination, other groups like the Evangelical Christian Baptist Church, Seventh-day Adventist Church, and various Pentecostal churches also exist, though often under strict scrutiny. The evangelical presence is particularly small, estimated at just 0.1% of the population. This environment of limited religious freedom means that church growth is stable at best, and often stifled, making every act of faith a profound statement of devotion.
Beyond the visible church, a vast spiritual harvest awaits. Key unreached people groups, predominantly Muslim, include the Aimaq, Azerbaijani, Baloch, Bashkir, Kazakh, Kurd, Persian, Tajik, and Turk. These communities have very low Christian adherence, highlighting the immense need for prayer and missionary engagement. The spiritual darkness in these areas underscores the urgency of the Great Commission.
In the face of such challenges, prayer becomes our most powerful weapon. Let us lift up Turkmenistan with these specific prayer points:
1. **For the Church:** Pray for the Church in Turkmenistan to stand firm in faith, demonstrating resilience and courage amidst ongoing government surveillance and restrictions on religious gatherings. May they find strength and unity in Christ. 2. **For the Lost:** Pray for the lost in Turkmenistan, that the hearts of the predominantly Muslim population would be open to the Gospel and that they would encounter Jesus Christ through dreams, visions, and personal testimonies. 3. **For Government and Leaders:** Pray for the government and leaders of Turkmenistan, that they would uphold true religious freedom, ease restrictions on Christian activities, and govern with justice and compassion for all citizens. 4. **For Specific Challenges:** Pray for protection and provision for believers facing persecution, imprisonment, and social pressure due to their faith, and for wisdom for them to find safe ways to worship and share the Gospel. 5. **For Revival and Awakening:** Pray for a powerful spiritual revival and awakening across Turkmenistan, that the Holy Spirit would move mightily, bringing transformation to individuals, families, and communities throughout the nation.
How can we, as global believers, get involved? First, commit to regular prayer for the persecuted church and unreached people groups in Turkmenistan, asking God to strengthen believers and open doors for the Gospel. Second, support reputable ministry organizations such as Mission Eurasia, Barnabas Aid, Slavic Gospel Association, and Open Doors, which are working discreetly to provide Bibles, discipleship materials, and training to Christian leaders and believers. Third, raise awareness about the challenges faced by Christians in Turkmenistan within your local church and community, encouraging others to pray and advocate for religious freedom.
Let us cling to the promise found in Psalm 121:1-2: \"I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.\" This powerful scripture reminds believers in Turkmenistan that their ultimate help and strength come from the Lord, even in the face of immense challenges and isolation. May this truth empower them and inspire us to stand with them in faith and prayer. Together, we can make a difference for the Kingdom in Turkmenistan."
