Love on United Arab Emirates: Praying for the Nations
The United Arab Emirates (UAE), a land often associated with towering skyscrapers and vast deserts, is also a nation with a vibrant, though often unseen, spiritual landscape. While Islam is the official religion, the UAE is home to a significant and growing expatriate Christian population. This diverse community, drawn from various nations, contributes to a unique spiritual dynamic where faith is practiced amidst cultural richness and governmental regulations.
Christianity in the UAE is experiencing a quiet but steady growth, with an estimated 12.9% of the population identifying as Christian, totaling approximately 1.45 million believers. Among these, evangelicals constitute about 1.5%. Major denominations present include Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and various Protestant churches such as Anglican, Evangelical, Mar Thoma, Presbyterian, Baptist, Brethren, and Pentecostal. The government officially recognizes these denominations, allowing freedom of worship within designated areas. However, sharing the Christian faith with Muslims is restricted, and conversion from Islam is discouraged, presenting unique challenges for believers.
Despite these limitations, the church in the UAE is active and resilient. Many local ministries and expatriate churches are committed to serving their communities and demonstrating Christ's love. Organizations like DCC Firm Foundation, New Life Church, Well of Life, and Gulf Theological Seminary are actively involved in nurturing faith and training leaders. Christian Aid also plays a vital role in assisting indigenous ministries, ensuring the spread of the Gospel through culturally sensitive approaches.
However, a significant spiritual need remains: the unreached people groups. Joshua Project identifies 36 unreached people groups in the UAE, representing over 8.4 million individuals who have little to no access to the Gospel. These include various Arab groups (Emirati, Iraqi, Jordanian, Lebanese, Libyan, Moroccan, Omani, Palestinian, Saudi-Hijazi, Sudanese, Syrian, Tunisian, Yemeni), as well as Afghan, Baloch, Bedouin, Chinese, Deaf, Hazara, Malay, and Malayali communities. These are the hearts and souls for whom we must earnestly pray.
How can we, as a global body of believers, engage with and support the work of God in the UAE? Firstly, **support indigenous ministries** financially or through prayer. These local efforts are often the most effective in navigating cultural sensitivities and reaching communities. Secondly, **volunteer with Christian organizations** working in the region, offering your skills and time to support their vital work. Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, **pray for missionaries and local believers** in the UAE. Pray for their protection, wisdom, and boldness to live out their faith. Finally, **advocate for religious freedom** and the rights of Christians in the UAE, seeking avenues to promote understanding and tolerance.
Let us stand in prayer for the United Arab Emirates:
* **For the Church:** Pray for the Church in the UAE to experience deeper unity amidst its diverse denominations, and for continued spiritual growth and maturity among believers. * **For the Lost:** Ask God to open doors for the Gospel to reach the many unreached people groups in the UAE, and for hearts to be receptive to the message of Christ. * **For Government and Leaders:** Intercede for the government and leaders of the UAE, that they would be granted wisdom, promote religious freedom, and ensure justice for all residents. * **For Specific Challenges:** Pray for strength and perseverance for Christians facing restrictions on sharing their faith, and for creative and loving ways to demonstrate the love of Christ. * **For Revival and Awakening:** Cry out for a powerful spiritual revival and awakening across the United Arab Emirates, that many would come to know Jesus as Lord and Savior.
Matthew 5:14-16 reminds us, "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." This verse encourages believers in the UAE to live out their faith authentically, allowing their good works and transformed lives to be a beacon of Christ's love and truth in a society where direct evangelism is restricted. May their light shine brightly, drawing many to the Father. Let us join them in prayer and support, believing for a mighty move of God in the United Arab Emirates.
