How to Pray for Someone in Public (Even If You're Nervous)

By ·

How to offer prayer to a stranger or friend, what to say when you pray out loud, short example prayers, and how to follow up without being pushy.

Five words open more doors than almost anything else a Christian can say: "Can I pray for you?" Most people — believers or not — will say yes, and many are moved that a stranger cared enough to ask. Here is how to offer, how to pray in plain words, and what to do next.

The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Why praying for people matters

Praying for someone puts Jesus at the centre of the conversation without a lecture. It shows love in a way people feel. And God answers prayer — sometimes in the moment, sometimes later, sometimes in ways nobody expected. Jesus told His followers to heal the sick and proclaim the Kingdom (Luke 10:9); praying for people is where both begin.

How to offer prayer

Notice

Someone mentions a sore back, a job interview, a sick parent. Or you're on outreach and simply stop someone with a smile.

Ask simply

"Would it be okay if I prayed for that right now? It'll take thirty seconds." Asking makes it easy to say no and respects them.

Ask what they'd like prayer for

Let them name it. Listen properly — people often share something deeper the second time you ask.

Ask before any touch

"Can I put a hand on your shoulder?" If they hesitate, don't. Keep it appropriate, brief and in public view.

What to say when you pray out loud

Keep your eyes open if that feels more natural, use their name, speak in normal words and keep it short. You aren't performing; you are talking to God on their behalf. If you don't know what to say when you pray, a simple pattern helps: thank God, ask clearly, bless the person.

For healing: "Jesus, thank you that you love Sarah. I ask you to heal her back right now — take away the pain and bring full strength. Let her know you're real. In Jesus' name, amen." Then gently ask, "How does it feel?"

For a worry: "Father, you know what Mark is facing at work. Give him peace tonight, wisdom for tomorrow and favour with the people deciding. Show him you're with him. In Jesus' name."

For grief: "Lord, comfort Ana in her loss. Hold her close, surround her with people who care, and let her feel your presence. In Jesus' name."

For someone far from God: "Jesus, thank you for Tyler. Would you show him how much you love him and make yourself real to him this week. In your name."

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

After you pray

Ask how they're doing. If you prayed for pain, it's fine to ask whether anything changed and to pray again if they're happy to — Jesus sometimes prayed more than once (Mark 8:22–25). Then, if it's natural, tell them why you pray: because Jesus is alive and cares about them. Offer a next step — a church, a weekly group, or the page on how to know Jesus. If they'd like you to check in, write their name down and follow up.

A few cautions

Never tell someone they weren't healed because of their lack of faith. Pray, trust God, and leave the outcome with Him.

Don't tell anyone to stop taking medication or skip a doctor. Pray alongside medical care, not instead of it.

Don't share what someone told you in prayer without their permission.

Respect a no, every time.

Questions people ask

Is it okay to ask a stranger if I can pray for them?

Yes. Asked kindly, with an easy way to say no, most people appreciate being offered prayer. Respect their answer and keep it brief.

Do I need to close my eyes or use special words?

No. Prayer is talking to God. Plain words, eyes open or closed, short and sincere is perfect — especially in public.

What if nothing happens when I pray for healing?

Keep loving the person and keep praying. God hears every prayer; answers come in different ways and times. Never put the blame on the person you prayed for.

Can I pray for someone of another faith or no faith?

Yes, if they're willing. Pray in Jesus' name, honestly and respectfully, and let the prayer be an expression of love rather than an argument.

How do I get more confident praying for people?

Practise with friends, go out with an experienced team, and start with short prayers. Confidence grows quickly once you've prayed for a few people.
