How to Read the Bible for the First Time
You do not have to start at Genesis or understand every verse. A one-chapter-a-day way into the Gospel of John, and three questions that keep the reading honest.
The Bible is a library, not a single book you have to finish before it counts. You do not need a study Bible, a perfect reading plan, or a quiet house. You need a starting place and a way to notice what you just read.
These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Start in one Gospel, not at page one
Genesis is worth your life. It is a hard front door. The Gospel of John was written so a person could meet Jesus quickly: who He is, what He did, and what it means to trust Him. Read one chapter a day. If a chapter is long, stop at a natural break and finish it tomorrow. Finishing is not the point. Meeting Him is.

A week you can actually keep
John 1 through John 7 is a strong first week. Same time, same chair, phone in another room if you can. Read it out loud when your mind wanders. Any ordinary translation you can understand is enough — a free Bible app counts. You do not have to buy anything to begin.

Read a short section
One chapter, or less. Slow enough that you could tell someone what happened.
Ask three questions
What does this show me about Jesus? What is true here that I can trust? What is one thing to do, or stop doing, today?
Write one sentence
"Today I noticed…" If you write nothing else, write that. It keeps the reading from sliding off.
Leave the question
Mark what you do not understand and keep going. Ask a Christian you trust, or bring it to a local church. Confusion is not failure.
You will not understand all of it
Some sentences will be clear the first time. Some will not be clear for years. Do not stop the chapter to solve every hard line, and do not pretend a verse said something it did not. The aim of a first reading is to know Jesus better than you did yesterday, not to have an opinion on every verse.

If you want a week with someone beside you
The seven-day guide walks a new believer through grace, prayer, Scripture, church, and baptism — one day at a time, saved only on your device. Open the guide
Read it with a person, not only a screen
A chapter on your own is a real start. A chapter with another Christian is how most people stay with it. Tell someone you are reading John. Ask them what they do when a passage is confusing. If you do not know a Christian yet, a healthy local church is the right place to ask — and the city groups are a place to meet people who will not make you perform.

If you are not sure you believe it
You can read John without having everything settled. Read it as a person looking for what is true, and say so. If you want the story of Jesus in one plain explanation before you open a chapter, that page is short, and it ends with a prayer only if you want one. Talking to God while you read can be as simple as the ordinary words you already have.
