When Crisis Hits, the Church Should Be First on the Ground

By ·

Storms, fires, and floods don't wait for committees. How local churches can be ready to be the hands and feet of Jesus when their community is hurting.

When disaster hits a community, people don't first ask what a church believes. They notice who shows up with water, hands, and a willingness to stay.

Feed the hungry, and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness.

Compassion is not a detour from the Gospel

Jesus healed, fed, and touched people — and preached. Not one instead of the other. When we meet real needs in His name, the message stops being theoretical.

What readiness looks like

Know your neighbours before the crisis

Relationship is the infrastructure. You can't mobilise trust you never built.

Keep a simple list

Who has a truck, a chainsaw, a spare room, medical training, a kitchen? Write it down now.

Decide who calls it

In a crisis, clarity beats enthusiasm. Someone needs authority to say 'go'.

Show up early and stay late

Attention leaves after a week. Real need lasts for months. The Church can be the ones still there.

The everyday version

Most weeks there's no headline disaster — just quiet ones. A single mother behind on rent. Someone sleeping rough in your downtown. A neighbour after a diagnosis. That's the crisis work most of us are actually called to, and it's what our city outreach groups do week after week.

Freely you have received. Freely give — and let the darkness around you get a little brighter.
