Your Oikos: The Mission Field You Already Have
By Daniel Ziedins ·
Most people think evangelism means talking to strangers. Usually it doesn't. Meet the 8–15 people God has already placed in your life.
If the word "evangelism" makes your stomach tighten, this is for you. Because the most fruitful mission field in your life probably isn't a street corner in another country. It's your kitchen table, your group chat, and your break room.
A word worth knowing
The New Testament uses the Greek word oikos (οἶκος) — household, or sphere of influence. In the ancient world your oikos wasn't just blood relatives; it was everyone in your orbit: family, close friends, workmates, neighbours, the people you saw every week.
When Jesus healed the man from the Gerasenes, the man begged to go with Him. Jesus said no — and gave him a better assignment.
Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you.
Why this changes everything
You already have trust with these people. You've already earned the right to be heard. No cold open, no script — just a real relationship where the most important thing in your life eventually comes up.
You don't need a platform. You need presence.
You don't need to be an expert. You need to be honest.
You don't need a crowd. You need a name — one real person you're praying for.
How to actually do it this week
Write the names down
Eight to fifteen people. Actually write them. Vague intentions produce vague obedience.
Pray for them by name
Daily if you can. A name you've prayed over is much harder to forget.
Ask one real question
"How are you doing — actually?" Then listen longer than is comfortable.
Offer to pray
Out loud, right there, if they're open. This is where most stories turn.
Take the next small step
An invitation, a meal, a Bible, a church service. Small and consistent beats big and rare.
A free tool to help you start
The Oikos Map lets you name the people in your sphere of influence and keep them in front of you in prayer. It's free, it takes about five minutes, and it will change how you pray this week. Build your Oikos Map
This is how a city changes
Our own story is exactly this. Love on Hamilton began in 2014 with a handful of people who simply started loving the people in front of them. That grew into outreach groups across 12 cities — not by strategy, but by faithfulness in small circles.
You are not a spectator in what God is doing. Every disciple who makes a disciple changes the math of the whole world.
