How to Pray for Revival in Your City and Nation
By Daniel Ziedins ·
What revival is, what Scripture says about it, and a simple way to pray for revival in your city — alone, with your church, or on the streets.
Every great move of God in history began with ordinary people praying. Revival isn't something we can manufacture with events or techniques — it's God doing what only He can do. But Scripture is clear that He invites His people to ask, to humble themselves and to seek His face. Here's how to pray for revival where you live.
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
What is revival?
Revival is a season when God awakens His people to new love for Him — deep repentance, fresh hunger for Scripture and prayer, unity, holiness and boldness — and many people outside the church come to faith as a result. It's God reviving what has grown cold. "Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?" (Psalm 85:6).
Church history records many such seasons, often starting small — a few people praying faithfully for their town before anything visible happened. Revival begins with the church, but it doesn't stay there; it spills into streets, homes and workplaces.
How to pray for revival
Start with your own heart
Revival begins with God's people. Ask Him to search you, confess what He shows you, and ask for a fresh love for Jesus. See what repentance means.
Pray for the church in your city
Pray for pastors and congregations by name, for unity across churches, for a hunger for God's Word and for boldness to share the Gospel.
Pray for people far from God
Pray for neighbours, coworkers and family by name, and for whole groups — students, those struggling with addiction, the lonely, leaders. Ask God to draw many to Himself.
Pray over places
Walk your neighbourhood and pray for homes, schools, businesses and civic leaders. Our prayer walk builder plans a walk with prompts for real places.
Pray Scripture back to God
Use passages like 2 Chronicles 7:14, Habakkuk 3:2, Psalm 85:6 and Acts 4:29–31. Praying God's words keeps your prayers anchored to His promises.
Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, Lord. Repeat them in our day, in our time make them known.
Pray together
Prayer for revival grows when believers pray together. Start a weekly prayer meeting, add a revival prayer time to your small group, or pray before and after outreach. The early church "devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer" (Acts 2:42) — and God moved powerfully. God Heal Our Land gathers believers to pray for revival and has a shared prayer wall.
Pray, then go
Prayer for revival and sharing the Gospel belong together. As you pray for your city, look for the people God puts in front of you. Join a weekly outreach group and pray for people on the streets — many of the stories of God moving in a city begin with someone being willing to ask a stranger, "Can I pray for you?" (here's how).
Questions people ask
What is a revival in Christianity?
A season when God awakens His people to renewed love for Him — repentance, prayer, hunger for Scripture, unity and boldness — and many people come to faith as a result.

How do I pray for revival in my city?
Start with your own heart, then pray for local churches and pastors, for people far from God by name, over places in your city, and with Scripture — ideally alongside other believers.
