What Is the Kingdom of God? Meaning, Verses and Why It Matters

By ·

Jesus talked about the Kingdom of God more than almost anything else. What it means, the key verses, "already and not yet," and how to seek it first today.

Jesus' first public message was about it. Most of His parables explain it. He taught His followers to pray for it every day. The Kingdom of God was at the centre of everything Jesus said — so understanding it changes how you read the Gospels and how you live this week.

The time has come. The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!

What is the Kingdom of God?

The Kingdom of God is God's rule and reign — wherever what God wants is actually done. It isn't mainly a place on a map; it's a reality where God is King. Jesus taught us to pray, "your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven" (Matthew 6:10). Wherever His will is done, His Kingdom is present.

Already here, and not yet complete

Jesus said the Kingdom had "come near" in Him. When He healed the sick, forgave sinners and set people free, the Kingdom was breaking in. Yet He also taught His followers to pray for it to come, and promised a day when He would return and make all things new. Christians often describe this as "already and not yet": the Kingdom is truly here through Jesus, and it is still growing toward its full arrival.

Jesus compared it to a mustard seed — tiny at first, then a large tree (Matthew 13:31–32) — and to yeast working through dough. It grows quietly and steadily, one life and one community at a time.

What the Kingdom looks like

Righteousness, peace and joy. "The kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit" (Romans 14:17).

The last made first. Jesus welcomed children, the poor, the outsider and the sinner.

Forgiveness and reconciliation. Enemies become family.

Healing and freedom. Jesus' miracles were signs of what His reign brings.

A people from every nation. The Kingdom spreads through the Great Commission — see what the Great Commission is.

How do you enter the Kingdom?

Jesus said the way in is to repent and believe the good news (Mark 1:15) and that "no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again" (John 3:3). God "has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves" (Colossians 1:13). It's entered by trusting the King. See what it means to be born again.

Seek first the Kingdom

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Seeking the Kingdom first means putting God's priorities ahead of our own in every area — family, money, work and time. That includes our work: Kingdom business is about doing ordinary work for an extraordinary King (see work as worship). It also means joining the mission: praying "your kingdom come" over your street and then loving the people on it.

God's rule and reign — wherever what God wants is done. Jesus brought it near through His life, death and resurrection, and it will be complete when He returns.

Where does Jesus talk about the Kingdom of God?

Throughout the Gospels — Mark 1:15, Matthew 6:10 and 6:33, the parables in Matthew 13, John 3:3, and Luke 17:20–21, among many others.

Putting God's priorities and His righteousness ahead of everything else, trusting Him to provide what we need (Matthew 6:33).
