What Is Intercessory Prayer? How to Pray for Others

By ·

Intercessory prayer is praying on behalf of others. What the Bible says, examples from Scripture, what to pray for, and a simple way to start today.

Some of the most important work in God's Kingdom happens unseen: someone quietly praying for a friend, a city or a nation. That's intercession — praying on behalf of others. Jesus Himself does it for us. Here's what it is and how to do it.

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people.

What is intercessory prayer?

Intercession is praying to God on behalf of someone else — standing between a person, place or need and the God who can help. It's an act of love: carrying someone to God when they can't or won't come themselves.

Intercession in the Bible

Abraham pleaded with God for the city of Sodom (Genesis 18).

Moses interceded for Israel after the golden calf (Exodus 32).

God searched for someone to "stand before me in the gap" on behalf of the land (Ezekiel 22:30).

The church prayed earnestly for Peter in prison — and he was set free (Acts 12).

Jesus "is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us" (Romans 8:34).

Who to pray for

Friends and family who don't know Jesus — by name, regularly.

Fellow believers — "always keep on praying for all the Lord's people" (Ephesians 6:18).

Leaders — "for kings and all those in authority" (1 Timothy 2:2).

Your city — its schools, businesses, churches and people in need. See how to pray for revival.

The nations — especially unreached peoples. Use our nations prayer guide.

Even enemies — Jesus said to "pray for those who persecute you" (Matthew 5:44).

How to intercede

Keep a list

Write down names and needs. A simple list helps you pray faithfully and notice answers.

Pray Scripture

Turn verses into prayers: "Open the eyes of their heart" (Ephesians 1:18), "Give them wisdom" (James 1:5).

Be specific and persistent

Jesus told stories about persistent prayer (Luke 18:1). Keep asking.

Listen as you pray

Ask God how He wants you to pray — and whether He wants you to act. Intercession often leads to a phone call, a visit or a conversation.

Pray with others

Intercession grows in community — consider starting a prayer group.

The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Questions people ask

What is intercessory prayer?

Praying to God on behalf of other people, places or needs — standing in the gap for someone and asking God to act.

What does the Bible say about intercession?

1 Timothy 2:1 urges prayer and intercession for all people; Ezekiel 22:30 speaks of standing in the gap; Romans 8:34 says Jesus intercedes for us; and the church interceded for Peter in Acts 12.

What is the difference between prayer and intercession?

Prayer is talking with God about anything; intercession is a type of prayer focused on others' needs rather than your own.

Who should I pray for?

Family and friends who don't know Jesus, fellow believers, leaders, your city, the nations and even people who oppose you.

Do I need a special gift to intercede?

No. Some people are especially drawn to intercession, but every Christian is called to pray for others.
