Love on The World

Glossary — Faith & Outreach Words, Explained

Plain-language meanings of Gospel, grace, repentance, disciple, the Great Commission, oikos, prayer walk, baptism and more — each with Scripture and a link to go deeper.

Baptism

A public act of obedience in which a believer is immersed in (or washed with) water to identify with Jesus' death and resurrection. It does not earn salvation; it declares the new life Jesus has already given. (Romans 6:3-4)

Born again

The new spiritual life God gives a person who puts their trust in Jesus. Jesus used the phrase to describe a fresh start that comes from God, not from trying harder. (John 3:3)

Church

The people who follow Jesus, gathered together. A local church is a community where believers worship, learn the Bible, care for one another and grow — not only a building. (Acts 2:42-47)

Disciple

A follower and learner of Jesus — someone who trusts Him, stays close to Him and obeys what He teaches, day by day. (Luke 9:23)

Disciple-making

Helping someone else follow Jesus, who then helps someone else. It is how Love on The World grows: disciples who make disciples, rather than a crowd that gathers once. (2 Timothy 2:2)

Evangelism

Sharing the good news about Jesus with people who do not yet follow Him — with words and with love, honestly and without pressure. (Romans 10:14-15)

Faith

Trusting Jesus — relying on who He is and what He has done rather than on your own record. Faith is not the absence of questions; it is turning toward Him with them. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Follow-up

Staying in touch after a conversation about Jesus: praying for the person, checking in, and helping them take a next step toward Him and a local church.

Gospel

Literally "good news": that Jesus, God come as a man, died for our sin and physically rose from the dead, so anyone who trusts Him is forgiven and given new life as a gift. (1 Corinthians 15:3-4)

Grace

God's undeserved kindness — a gift you did nothing to earn and cannot pay back. Christians are saved by grace, through faith, not by being good enough. (Ephesians 2:8)

Great Commission

Jesus' final instruction to His followers: go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them and teaching them to obey Him. It calls for disciples, not only decisions. (Matthew 28:18-20)

Holy Spirit

God's own Spirit, who lives in everyone who trusts Jesus — comforting, guiding, changing them from the inside and giving them courage to share their faith. (John 14:26)

Intercession

Praying on behalf of other people, places or nations — asking God to act for them. (1 Timothy 2:1)

Jesus Festival

A free, public celebration of Jesus in a city — worship, the Gospel, prayer and practical love in a park or public space, open to everyone.

Kingdom of God

God's rule and reign, already breaking into the world through Jesus and one day complete. Jesus taught His followers to pray "Your kingdom come" and to seek it first. (Matthew 6:10, 33)

Oikos

A Greek word for "household": the circle of people already in your everyday life — family, friends, neighbours, co-workers. It is usually where sharing your faith begins. (Acts 16:31)

Outreach group

A local Love on The World team that goes out on a regular rhythm to pray for people, meet practical needs and share Jesus in public. Newcomers need no experience.

Prayer walk

Praying on location while you walk through a neighbourhood — for the homes, schools, businesses and people you pass — with your eyes open.

Repentance

Turning around: away from running your own life, and toward God. It is less about feeling sorry and more about a change of direction. (Acts 3:19)

Salvation

Being rescued by God from sin and its consequences and brought into a restored relationship with Him — received as a gift by trusting Jesus. (Romans 10:9)

Sin

Not just rule-breaking but a broken relationship: each of us choosing to run our own lives rather than trust the God who made us. Its fruit is the harm we see in the world and in ourselves. (Romans 3:23)

Street outreach

Going into public places to meet people where they are — offering practical help, praying with anyone who is open, and sharing the Gospel respectfully.

Testimony

Your own story of what Jesus has done in your life — what life was like, how you met Him, and what is changing. You do not need every answer to tell it. (Mark 5:19)

Unreached

People and places with little or no access to the Gospel or a local church. Praying for them is one way anyone can take part in the Great Commission. (Romans 15:20)
