What Is the Great Commission? Meaning, Verses and What It Asks of You

By ·

The Great Commission is Jesus' final instruction: go and make disciples of all nations. What it means, where it's found, and how ordinary believers live it.

Before Jesus returned to heaven, He gave His followers one assignment that would shape the next two thousand years. Christians call it the Great Commission. It isn't a job for missionaries and pastors only — it's the reason every follower of Jesus is still here. Here's what it says, what it means, and how to live it this week.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

What is the Great Commission?

The Great Commission is Jesus' command to His followers, given after His resurrection, to go into all the world and make disciples of every nation — baptizing them and teaching them to obey everything He commanded. It is called "great" because of its scope: all authority, all nations, everything He taught, and His presence always.

Where is it in the Bible?

The best-known version is Matthew 28:18–20, but every Gospel and the book of Acts records Jesus sending His followers out:

Matthew 28:18–20 — "Go and make disciples of all nations."

Mark 16:15 — "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation."

Luke 24:46–48 — repentance and forgiveness of sins preached in His name to all nations; "You are witnesses of these things."

John 20:21 — "As the Father has sent me, I am sending you."

Acts 1:8 — "You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

The four parts of the command

It rests on Jesus' authority

"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me." We don't go in our own strength or because we're persuasive. We go because the risen Jesus sends us.

The goal is disciples, not decisions

The one command in the sentence is "make disciples." Going, baptizing and teaching are how it happens. A disciple is a follower of Jesus who learns from Him, obeys Him and helps others do the same.

The scope is every nation

"All nations" means every people group, language and culture — including your street. Our prayer guide for the nations helps you carry the world in prayer.

The promise is His presence

"Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." The Commission ends with a promise, not a threat. You are never sent alone.

Is the Great Commission for every Christian?

Yes. Jesus spoke to His disciples, and the command was to make more disciples who would obey everything He commanded — including this command. That is how the Gospel reached us. Not everyone is called to move overseas, but every believer is called to be a witness where they live, work and play (see your oikos is your mission field). Some go, some send, and all pray.

How to live the Great Commission this week

Pray for three people by name who don't yet know Jesus. Ask God for an opening.

Share your story with one of them. Here's a three-minute outline.

Join a weekly outreach and learn beside others — find a group in your city.

Disciple one person. Read the Bible together and help them obey what they learn. How to disciple someone walks you through it.

Support those who go. Pray for and give to people taking the Gospel where you can't.

After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb.

Questions people ask

What is the Great Commission in simple terms?

Jesus' instruction to His followers to go and make disciples of all nations — sharing the Gospel, baptizing new believers and teaching them to obey Him — with the promise that He is always with them.

Where is the Great Commission found in the Bible?

Most famously in Matthew 28:18–20, with parallels in Mark 16:15, Luke 24:46–48, John 20:21 and Acts 1:8.

Why is it called the Great Commission?

Because of its scope: Jesus claims all authority, sends His followers to all nations, tells them to teach everything He commanded, and promises to be with them always.

What is the difference between the Great Commission and the Great Commandment?

The Great Commandment (Matthew 22:37–39) is to love God with all your heart, soul and mind and love your neighbour as yourself. The Great Commission is the mission that flows from that love: making disciples of all nations.

Is the Great Commission only for missionaries?

No. Every follower of Jesus is called to be His witness. Some cross oceans; most begin with the people already around them.
