Bible Verses About Prayer: What Scripture Teaches About Talking to God

By ·

Key Bible verses about prayer grouped by theme: why to pray, how to pray, faith, persistence, praying for others and unanswered prayer — with short notes.

Prayer is simply talking with God — and the Bible has a lot to say about it. Jesus prayed early in the morning, through the night and from the cross. These verses show why prayer matters, how to do it, and how to keep going when answers seem slow.

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

Why pray

Jeremiah 33:3 — "Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know."

Hebrews 4:16 — "Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need."

Psalm 145:18 — "The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth."

James 4:8 — "Come near to God and he will come near to you."

How Jesus taught us to pray

Matthew 6:6 — "When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen."

Matthew 6:7–8 — don't babble with many words: "your Father knows what you need before you ask him."

Matthew 6:9–13 — the Lord's Prayer: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name…" See the Lord's Prayer, line by line.

John 14:13 — "I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son."

Praying with faith

Mark 11:24 — "Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours."

James 5:16 — "The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective."

1 John 5:14 — "If we ask anything according to his will, he hears us."

Keep asking

Matthew 7:7 — "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you."

Luke 18:1 — Jesus told a parable "to show them that they should always pray and not give up."

Romans 12:12 — "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer."

Colossians 4:2 — "Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful."

Praying for others

1 Timothy 2:1 — "Petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people." See What Is Intercessory Prayer?

Matthew 9:38 — "Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."

Matthew 18:20 — "Where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them." See How to Start a Prayer Group.

2 Chronicles 7:14 — "If my people… will humble themselves and pray… then I will hear from heaven… and will heal their land."

When you don't know what to pray

Romans 8:26 — "We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans."

Psalm 62:8 — "Pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge."

When answers are slow

Scripture is honest that prayer is not a vending machine. Paul asked three times for his "thorn in the flesh" to be removed and heard instead, "My grace is sufficient for you" (2 Corinthians 12:9). Jesus Himself prayed, "Yet not as I will, but as you will" (Matthew 26:39). God always hears; sometimes His answer is yes, sometimes wait, and sometimes something better than we asked.

Questions people ask

What does the Bible say about prayer?

The Bible teaches that prayer is talking with God as a Father: we can approach Him with confidence (Hebrews 4:16), pray continually (1 Thessalonians 5:17), ask in faith and keep asking (Matthew 7:7), and trust His will (1 John 5:14).

What is the most powerful Bible verse about prayer?

Many point to James 5:16, "The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective," and Philippians 4:6–7, which promises God's peace to those who pray.

Where in the Bible does Jesus teach how to pray?

In Matthew 6:5–13 and Luke 11:1–13, Jesus teaches about private, sincere prayer and gives the Lord's Prayer as a pattern.

What does 'pray without ceasing' mean?

1 Thessalonians 5:17 calls believers to live in constant conversation with God — not praying every second, but turning to Him throughout the day.

Why doesn't God answer some prayers?

God hears every prayer, but His answer may be yes, wait or something different. Even Jesus prayed, "Not as I will, but as you will" (Matthew 26:39).
