What Is the Trinity? One God in Three Persons, Simply Explained

By ·

What is the Trinity? One God in three persons — Father, Son and Holy Spirit — explained simply, with where it comes from in the Bible and why it matters.

The word "Trinity" isn't in the Bible, and Christians freely admit it describes a mystery. But it is not a contradiction or a later invention. It is the Church's way of summarising what the Bible says about God — and it turns out to be the most beautiful thing about Him.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

The short answer

Christians believe there is one God, who eternally exists as three distinct persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Each person is fully God. They are not three gods, and they are not one person wearing three masks. Notice that Jesus speaks of one "name" — singular — shared by three persons.

Three truths the Bible holds together

There is only one God

"Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one" (Deuteronomy 6:4). The New Testament never abandons this (1 Corinthians 8:6; James 2:19).

The Father, the Son and the Spirit are each God

The Father is called God (John 6:27). Jesus is called God (John 1:1; John 20:28; Titus 2:13). The Holy Spirit is called God (Acts 5:3–4) and does what only God does.

They are distinct persons

At Jesus' baptism the Son is in the water, the Spirit descends like a dove, and the Father speaks from heaven (Matthew 3:16–17). Jesus prays to the Father and promises to send the Spirit (John 14:16).

The doctrine of the Trinity is simply what you get when you refuse to drop any of these three truths. Early Christians worshipped Jesus and prayed in the Spirit while remaining fierce monotheists, and the Church's creeds — such as the Nicene Creed of AD 325, expanded in 381 — put that faith into words.

Why the usual analogies fall short

Water, ice and steam suggests one God changing forms over time — an old error called modalism. The Father, Son and Spirit exist at the same time (Matthew 3:16–17).

Three parts of an egg suggests each person is only a third of God. Each is fully God.

One man who is a father, son and husband describes one person in three roles, not three persons.

Mystery is not contradiction

Christians do not say God is one in the same way that He is three. He is one in being and three in persons. That is beyond full human understanding — which is what you might expect if God is real and not invented.

Why the Trinity matters

God is love — eternally. "God is love" (1 John 4:8). Before creation, the Father, Son and Spirit loved one another. God didn't need to make us to have someone to love; He made us to share His love.

The Gospel needs it. The Father sends the Son, the Son dies and rises for us, and the Spirit brings us new life. See What Is the Gospel?

Prayer is shaped by it. Christians pray to the Father, through the Son, in the Spirit (Ephesians 2:18).

Mission flows from it. The Father sent the Son; the Son sends us, filled with the Spirit (John 20:21–22).

Talking about the Trinity with friends

Muslim, Jewish and Jehovah's Witness friends often raise the Trinity. Listen first, be honest that it is a mystery, and point to Jesus Himself: who He claimed to be and why His followers worshipped Him. See Who Is Jesus? and How to Answer Hard Questions About Faith.

Questions people ask

What is the Trinity in simple terms?

The Trinity is the Christian belief that there is one God who exists eternally as three distinct persons — the Father, the Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit — each fully God.

Is the word Trinity in the Bible?

No. The word was coined by early Christians to summarise what the Bible teaches: that there is one God, and that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are each God and distinct from one another.

Do Christians believe in three gods?

No. Christianity is monotheistic. Christians believe in one God (Deuteronomy 6:4) who exists as three persons, not three separate gods.

Where is the Trinity seen in the Bible?

Passages include Jesus' baptism (Matthew 3:16–17), the Great Commission's single 'name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit' (Matthew 28:19), and Paul's blessing in 2 Corinthians 13:14.

Why does the Trinity matter?

It shows that God is eternally love, it underlies the Gospel (the Father sends the Son, who saves us, and the Spirit gives new life), and it shapes how Christians pray and live on mission.
