What is the fruit of the Spirit? Galatians 5:22–23 explained: the nine qualities, what each means, and how the Holy Spirit grows them in you.
When Paul describes what a life led by God's Spirit looks like, he does not give a list of rules or achievements. He describes a character — nine qualities that together look a lot like Jesus. And he calls them fruit: something that grows, rather than something you manufacture.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Why "fruit" and not "fruits"?
Paul uses the singular. The fruit of the Spirit is one harvest with nine flavours, not a menu from which you pick your favourites. The Spirit does not grow patience in one believer and kindness in another; He grows the whole character of Christ in everyone He lives in. The contrast is with the "acts of the flesh" (Galatians 5:19–21) — plural, scattered and destructive.
The nine qualities
Love
Self-giving care for the good of others, modelled on Jesus (1 Corinthians 13:4–7). The root of all the rest.
Joy
Deep gladness in God that does not depend on circumstances — it can coexist with sorrow.
Peace
Wholeness with God and calm trust in Him, which overflows into peacemaking with others.
Forbearance
Patience with people: a long fuse, slow to anger, bearing with others' weaknesses.
Kindness
Practical, warm goodwill — the instinct to help and to speak gently.
Goodness
Moral integrity that acts for what is right, even when it costs.
Faithfulness
Reliability and loyalty — to God, to people and to your word.
Gentleness
Strength under control; humility that does not need to dominate.
Self-control
Mastery of desires and impulses, empowered by the Spirit rather than willpower alone.
How does the fruit grow?
Jesus said, "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing" (John 15:5). Branches don't strain to produce grapes; they stay connected to the vine. Fruit grows as we stay close to Jesus — through prayer, Scripture, worship, community and obedience. See How to Grow Closer to God.
Fruit grows in real soil
You rarely grow patience in a quiet room. God often uses difficult people, delays and disappointments as the very places where His Spirit grows His character in you.
Practical ways to cooperate with the Spirit
Abide daily
Begin the day with a few minutes in Scripture and prayer. See How to Read the Bible for the First Time.
Keep in step
"Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit" (Galatians 5:25). Ask Him through the day for help in the moment.
Confess quickly
When you see the acts of the flesh in yourself, bring them to God straight away and receive His forgiveness (1 John 1:9).
Practise in community
Love, patience and gentleness are relational. Grow them in a church or small group. See How to Find a Good Church.
Serve others
Kindness and goodness grow as they are used. Join an outreach and put love into action.
Fruit and gifts are not the same
Spiritual gifts are abilities given for service and differ from person to person; the fruit of the Spirit is the character every believer is meant to grow. A gifted person without fruit can do great damage; fruit is the real measure of maturity. Jesus said, "By their fruit you will recognise them" (Matthew 7:20). See What Are Spiritual Gifts?
Questions people ask
What are the 9 fruits of the Spirit?
Love, joy, peace, forbearance (patience), kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, listed in Galatians 5:22–23.
Why is it called the fruit of the Spirit?
Because these qualities are produced by the Holy Spirit living in a believer, much as fruit grows naturally on a healthy branch connected to the vine (John 15:5), rather than being achieved by effort alone.
Is it fruit or fruits of the Spirit?
Paul uses the singular 'fruit', describing one unified character with nine aspects that the Spirit grows together in every believer.
How do I grow the fruit of the Spirit?
By staying connected to Jesus through prayer, Scripture, worship and community, keeping in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:25), confessing sin quickly and putting love into practice by serving others.
What is the difference between the fruit of the Spirit and spiritual gifts?
Spiritual gifts are abilities for service that vary between believers; the fruit of the Spirit is the Christlike character the Spirit grows in all believers.
