Who Is the Holy Spirit (and What Does He Do?)

By ·

The Holy Spirit isn't a force or a feeling — He's God with every believer. Who He is, what He does, His fruit and gifts, and how to be led by Him.

Many Christians are comfortable talking about God the Father and Jesus, and much less sure about the Holy Spirit. Yet Jesus told His friends it was good for them that He was leaving, because the Spirit would come (John 16:7). The Holy Spirit is not an optional extra for a certain kind of Christian. He is God with us, every day.

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth.

Who is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity — fully God, alongside the Father and the Son. He is not an impersonal energy: the Bible says He teaches, speaks, guides, can be grieved and intercedes. Jesus called Him "another advocate" — someone just like Him who would be with His followers forever.

What does the Holy Spirit do?

Draws people to Jesus. He convicts the world of sin, righteousness and judgment (John 16:8) and opens hearts to the Gospel.

Gives new life. Being born again is His work (John 3:5–6).

Lives in every believer. Believers are sealed with "the promised Holy Spirit" (Ephesians 1:13) — a guarantee that we belong to God.

Teaches and reminds. "He will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you" (John 14:26).

Helps us pray. "The Spirit helps us in our weakness… the Spirit himself intercedes for us" (Romans 8:26).

Empowers witness. "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses" (Acts 1:8).

The fruit of the Spirit

As we walk with Him, the Spirit grows Jesus' character in us: "love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control" (Galatians 5:22–23). This fruit isn't produced by trying harder; it grows as we stay connected to Jesus.

The gifts of the Spirit

The Spirit also gives gifts to every believer — teaching, serving, encouragement, generosity, healing, prophecy, faith and more (Romans 12; 1 Corinthians 12). "To each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good" (1 Corinthians 12:7). The gifts are for building others up and reaching people, not for status.

How to walk with the Holy Spirit

Invite Him daily

Paul told believers to "be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18) — an ongoing invitation, not a one-time event. Ask each morning for His help and leading.

Read Scripture

The Spirit inspired the Bible and speaks through it. The more you know His words, the more you'll recognize His voice — see how to hear God's voice.

Obey promptly

When He nudges you to encourage someone, apologize, give or pray, respond. Obedience grows sensitivity.

Step out in faith

Pray for people, share Jesus, serve. Acts shows the Spirit moving powerfully as ordinary believers went and spoke — start by offering prayer.
