How to Hear God's Voice: A Practical, Biblical Guide
By Daniel Ziedins ·
God speaks — mainly through Scripture, and also by His Spirit, through others and in circumstances. How to listen, test what you hear and respond.
"My sheep listen to my voice," Jesus said. That's a promise, not a privilege for a few. Hearing God isn't about mystical techniques or waiting for an audible voice. It's about learning to recognize a Person you're getting to know. Here's how God speaks, how to listen and how to be sure it's Him.
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
How does God speak?
Through Scripture — first and most clearly. "All Scripture is God-breathed" (2 Timothy 3:16). The Bible is the surest way to hear Him, and the standard for testing everything else.
By His Spirit. An inner prompting, a thought that brings a verse to mind, conviction or peace. Often a "gentle whisper" rather than thunder (1 Kings 19:12).
Through other believers. Wise counsel, preaching, a friend's encouragement.
Through circumstances. Open and closed doors — read in the light of Scripture, not on their own.
How to listen
Open your Bible expecting Him to speak
Read slowly. Ask: what does this show me about God, and what is He asking of me? If you're new, start with the Gospel of John — see how to read the Bible for the first time.
Be still
"Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10). Turn off noise for a few minutes. Pray like Samuel: "Speak, for your servant is listening" (1 Samuel 3:10).
Ask specific questions
"Who should I encourage today?" "What do you think of me?" Write down what comes to mind.
Ask for wisdom
"If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all" (James 1:5).
How to test what you hear
Scripture tells us to "test the spirits to see whether they are from God" (1 John 4:1). Some simple filters:
Does it agree with the Bible? God never contradicts His Word.
Does it sound like Jesus? God's voice may convict, but it doesn't condemn or shame; it leads to life.
Does it build love? For God and for people.
Do wise believers confirm it? "Victory is won through many advisers" (Proverbs 11:14). Big decisions deserve counsel.
Is there peace over time? Hasty, fearful impressions are worth waiting on.
Respond with obedience
Hearing grows with doing. When you sense God prompting you to pray for someone, text an encouragement, give or apologize — do it. Many outreach stories begin with someone feeling a small nudge to stop and talk to a stranger. If that's you, here's how to pray for someone in public.
Questions people ask
How does God speak to people today?
Primarily through the Bible, and also by His Holy Spirit's inner prompting, through other believers and through circumstances — always consistent with Scripture.
How do I know if it's God or just my own thoughts?
Test it: does it agree with Scripture, sound like Jesus, build love, and find confirmation from wise believers over time? God never contradicts His Word.
Does God speak audibly?
He can, but it's rare. Most believers hear Him through Scripture and quiet inner prompting by the Holy Spirit — a gentle whisper rather than a loud voice.
Why can't I hear God?
Start with Scripture, which is God's voice in writing. Make space for stillness, ask specific questions, obey what you already know, and give it time — hearing grows with relationship.
What Bible verses talk about hearing God's voice?
John 10:27, 1 Samuel 3:10, 1 Kings 19:12, Psalm 46:10, James 1:5 and 1 John 4:1 are helpful places to start.
