What Is Evangelism? Meaning, Types and How to Start

By ·

Evangelism means sharing the good news about Jesus. What it is and isn't, the different ways Christians do it, why it matters, and how to start this week.

For many Christians, "evangelism" sounds like something for preachers with microphones or people with outgoing personalities. But the word simply means telling good news. If you have been changed by Jesus, you already have news worth sharing. Here's what evangelism is, the many forms it takes, and how to begin.

How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?

What is evangelism?

Evangelism is sharing the Gospel — the good news that Jesus died for our sins and rose again, so anyone who trusts Him can be forgiven and brought home to God — and inviting people to respond. The word comes from the Greek euangelion, "good news." An evangelist is simply a messenger of that news. (Here's the Gospel in four parts.)

What evangelism isn't

Not manipulation or pressure. We invite; God changes hearts.

Not winning arguments. Answering questions is part of it, but the goal is pointing people to Jesus.

Not only for experts. Every believer is called to be a witness (Acts 1:8).

Not only words or only deeds. Jesus both proclaimed the Kingdom and healed and served. Love in action and the spoken Gospel belong together.

Ways Christians share their faith

Personal (friendship) evangelism — sharing Jesus with the people already in your life. See sharing with family and friends and your oikos.

Testimony — telling what Jesus has done for you. A three-minute outline.

Street evangelism — sharing in public places with kindness and respect. A beginner's guide.

Prayer evangelism — offering to pray for people, which often opens conversations. How to pray for someone in public.

Servant evangelism — meeting practical needs as an expression of Jesus' love. 20 outreach ideas.

Events — public gatherings where many hear the Gospel at once, like Jesus Festival.

Why evangelism matters

Jesus commanded it (Matthew 28:19–20). Paul's question in Romans 10 still stands: people can't believe in someone they've never heard about. And it flows from love — for God, and for people Jesus died for. We are "Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us" (2 Corinthians 5:20). We don't save anyone; Paul said "I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow" (1 Corinthians 3:6). Our part is faithfulness.

Common forms include personal or friendship evangelism, sharing your testimony, street evangelism, prayer evangelism, servant evangelism and public events.
