What Is Grace? The Meaning of God's Grace in Plain Words
By Daniel Ziedins ·
Grace is God giving us what we could never earn. What it means, key Bible verses, how grace differs from mercy, and how it changes the way you live.
Grace is the heartbeat of the Christian faith — and the hardest thing for most of us to believe. Everything in life teaches us to earn: grades, jobs, approval. Grace says the most important thing of all can't be earned, only received. Here's what it means and why it changes everything.
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.
What is grace?
Grace is God's undeserved favour — His kindness given freely to people who haven't earned it and can't repay it. It's often summed up as "getting what we don't deserve." Forgiveness, new life, adoption into God's family and the help of the Holy Spirit are all gifts of grace.
Grace vs. mercy
The two belong together but aren't the same. Mercy is not getting what we do deserve — the penalty for sin. Grace is getting what we don't deserve — God's love, forgiveness and life. At the cross, both meet: "God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).
Saved by grace, not by works
The Bible is clear that nobody can earn salvation by being good enough. If we could, it wouldn't be grace. That is the best news in the world for anyone who knows they've fallen short: you don't have to clean up your life before coming to God. You come as you are, and He makes you new. See what is the Gospel.
Grace for every day
Grace isn't only how the Christian life starts; it's how it continues. "Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given" (John 1:16). When Paul begged God to remove a weakness, God answered, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9). Grace meets us in failure, weariness and need — again and again.
Does grace mean sin doesn't matter?
Paul anticipated the question: "Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means!" (Romans 6:1–2). Grace doesn't make us careless; it changes us. "The grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say 'No' to ungodliness" (Titus 2:11–12). People who know they've been loved freely begin to live differently — not to earn love, but because they already have it.
How grace changes how we treat others
We forgive because we've been forgiven.
We give generously because we've received freely — "Freely you have received; freely give" (Matthew 10:8).
We stop comparing because none of us earned our place.
We share the good news because grace is too good to keep to ourselves — see how to share it.
Questions people ask
What is grace in simple terms?
God's undeserved favour — His kindness, forgiveness and life given freely to people who haven't earned it and can't repay it.
What is the difference between grace and mercy?
Mercy is not receiving the punishment we deserve; grace is receiving the love and life we don't deserve. Both meet in Jesus' death for us.
What does saved by grace mean?
That salvation is a gift received through faith in Jesus, not a reward for good works (Ephesians 2:8–9).
If we're saved by grace, does it matter how we live?
Yes. Grace doesn't excuse sin; it trains us to say no to it (Titus 2:11–12). We live differently because we've been loved, not to earn love.
What are the main Bible verses about grace?
Ephesians 2:8–9, Romans 5:8, John 1:16, 2 Corinthians 12:9, Romans 6:1–2 and Titus 2:11–12 are key passages.
