What Is Worship? More Than Singing on Sunday
By Daniel Ziedins ·
What is worship according to the Bible? Its meaning, why we were made for it, worship in spirit and truth, and practical ways to worship God every day.
Ask most people what worship is and they'll describe the music at church. Singing is part of it — a precious part. But in the Bible, worship is the whole of a life turned toward God: what you love most, give yourself to and live for.
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God — this is your true and proper worship.
What the word means
The main Old Testament word for worship pictures bowing down; a common New Testament word means to kneel or to kiss the hand toward someone in honour. Another means service. Put together, worship is giving God the honour, love and obedience He deserves. The old English word "worth-ship" captures it: declaring what something is worth to you.
Everyone worships something
The question is not whether we worship but what. Paul says people "worshipped and served created things rather than the Creator" (Romans 1:25). Success, comfort, approval, romance, family — good things become gods when we look to them for what only God can give. True worship sets the heart free by putting God back in first place. See Seek First the Kingdom of God.
In spirit and in truth
Jesus told a Samaritan woman that the place of worship mattered less than its heart: "God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in the Spirit and in truth" (John 4:24). Worship in the Spirit is real, from the inside, enabled by the Holy Spirit. Worship in truth responds to God as He really is, revealed in Scripture and in Jesus — not as we imagine Him.
Worship is a response
We do not worship to get God's attention. We worship because He has already shown us mercy. Romans 12:1 begins, "in view of God's mercy." The more you see of His grace, the more worship rises. What is grace?
Ways the Bible shows worship
Singing
"Sing to the Lord a new song" — Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs together (Colossians 3:16).
Prayer and thanksgiving
Telling God who He is and thanking Him for what He has done. Learn more about Prayer and thanksgiving
Scripture
Hearing and obeying God's word is worship (James 1:22).
Giving
Generosity honours God as the owner of everything (2 Corinthians 9:7).
Work
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord" (Colossians 3:23). Learn more about Work
Serving others
Doing good and sharing with others are "sacrifices" that please God (Hebrews 13:16).
How to worship every day
Start the day by looking up
Before your phone, give God a moment of thanks and surrender: "Lord, today is Yours."
Sing when you can
In the car, in the shower, with headphones on a walk. Songs carry truth into the heart.
Turn ordinary tasks into offerings
Dishes, emails, school runs — do them for Him.
Gather with the church
Corporate worship matters; we are built up together (Hebrews 10:24–25). See How to Find a Good Church.
Worship in hard seasons
Job fell to the ground in worship in his grief (Job 1:20–21). Worship is sometimes most real when it costs most.
Questions people ask
What is the biblical definition of worship?
Worship is giving God the honour, love and obedience He deserves with your whole life. Romans 12:1 calls offering yourself as a living sacrifice your 'true and proper worship'.
What does it mean to worship in spirit and truth?
In John 4:24 Jesus says true worship is inward and real, enabled by the Holy Spirit, and directed to God as He truly is, revealed in Scripture and in Jesus.
Is worship only singing?
No. Singing is an important expression of worship, but the Bible also describes prayer, thanksgiving, obeying Scripture, giving, serving others and everyday work done for God as worship.
Why should we worship God?
Because He alone is worthy as Creator and Saviour, and because humans were made to worship. Worshipping God rather than created things puts life in its proper order.
How can I worship God every day?
Start the day with thanks and surrender, sing, pray, read Scripture, do ordinary work for Him, serve others and gather regularly with a church.
