How to Become a Christian: A Simple, Honest Guide

By ·

How do you become a Christian? A simple guide from the Bible: what it means, turning to Jesus in repentance and faith, a prayer to pray, and next steps.

You do not have to be good enough, know enough or feel enough to become a Christian. You have to come to Jesus. This guide explains what that means in plain words — and how you can do it today, wherever you are reading this.

If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

What is a Christian?

A Christian is not simply someone raised in a Christian home, someone who attends church, or someone who tries to be a good person. A Christian is someone who has trusted Jesus Christ as Saviour and follows Him as Lord. The word first appears in Acts 11:26, describing disciples — people who followed Jesus. It is a relationship before it is a religion.

Why we need it

The Bible is honest about the human condition: "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). Sin is more than bad behaviour; it is living as if we are God, and it separates us from Him. We cannot fix that by trying harder. That is why the Gospel is good news — God did for us what we could not do. See What Is the Gospel?

What God has done

Jesus, God the Son, lived the life we should have lived, died on the cross in our place to pay for our sin, and rose from the dead three days later. Because of this, forgiveness is offered as a free gift: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God" (Ephesians 2:8). How to respond: three simple steps

Admit

Agree with God that you have sinned and need His forgiveness. This is the heart of repentance — turning from running your own life and toward Him.

Believe

Trust that Jesus died for you and rose again, and that His sacrifice is enough. Faith is not a feeling; it is putting your weight on what Jesus has done.

Commit

Receive Jesus as Lord — the One you now follow. "To all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God" (John 1:12).

A prayer you can pray

There are no magic words, but many people find it helps to pray something like this: "Jesus, I know I have sinned and I need You. Thank You for dying for me and rising again. I turn from my sin and trust You as my Saviour. Be the Lord of my life. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and help me follow You. Amen."

What happens when you trust Jesus

You are forgiven — completely, not on probation (Colossians 2:13–14).

You are born again — given new life by the Holy Spirit. See What Does It Mean to Be Born Again?

You are adopted into God's family. See Who You Are in Christ.

You are not alone — the Holy Spirit lives in you to guide and change you.

Questions people ask

How do you become a Christian?

By turning from sin and trusting Jesus Christ, who died for your sins and rose again, as your Saviour and Lord. The Bible says that if you declare 'Jesus is Lord' and believe God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved (Romans 10:9).

Do I have to say a specific prayer to be saved?

No. Salvation comes through faith in Jesus, not through particular words. A prayer is simply a way of expressing that trust to God.

Do I need to be baptised or join a church to become a Christian?

Salvation is by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8–9). Baptism and joining a church are important next steps of obedience and growth, not requirements to earn salvation.

What if I don't feel any different?

Feelings vary. Your salvation rests on what Jesus has done and on God's promise, not on an emotional experience. Change usually grows over time as you read Scripture, pray and walk with other believers.

Can I become a Christian on my own, right now?

Yes. You can turn to Jesus wherever you are. It is still wise to tell another Christian and connect with a church so you are not walking alone.
